(A response to the Guelph Arts Council)
Art is very personal. I think of it primarily as an act of creation. It seems to be called into being of its own free will for its own sake, and it also takes on so much more significance when it is created for others and experienced by a community.
The first art I ever owned were india ink drawings done by my Aunt Linda. They were of Cyclops and The Silver Surfer (from Marvel comics). They gave me so much satisfaction in that they were created for me and by someone in my family who had real artistic ability.
Flash forward many years to the present. I now have three children who are all very creative and each has their own well developed sense of artistic expression in literature, theatre, dance, and music. Seeing them engaged in our Arts community in various ways, gives me certainty that the arts are a social imperative and a great benefit to our community.
It should also come as no surprise that my daughter drew the artwork for my hero themed ward4 campaign materials.
As a Councillor, I will definitely support the funding and promotion of the arts in our city.
